SUSTAINABILITY I had the pleasure of designing an installation in Worcester cathedral for a beautiful memorial service recently. The majority of flowers and foliage were home grown and the designs natural with no foam. The cathedral has a very dedicated team who work hard to arrange the weekly floral displays. They are all volunteers and rely on weddings and events to fund the flowers they use. Special permission had to obtained for me to install my designs. I had a long discussion with the ladies about sustainability and the use of floral foam, they were adamant that there was no other choice for them. We talked about alternatives but the main reason was that if they could not use foam they would lose the majority of their members. It’s something that had not occurred to me, the style of their designs is very dependent on foam as a mechanic so how to you persuade people who give their time and often pay for the flowers themselves to change their style and use different mechanics? I have the upmost respect for these ladies and am looking for a way forward. Suggestions welcome 🌿
